How Early to Get to O'Hare Airport (ORD)?

How Early To Ohare

The recommended arrival time at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) is 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights. O'Hare Airport is among the busiest airports around the globe, with an annual passenger volume of about 80 million people.

If your flight is domestic and you are a carry-on passenger with TSA PreCheck or CLEAR, then the time required will be 1.5 hours. If you are checking luggage during rush hours, which are 5 am to 8 am and 4 pm to 7 pm, then you need 2.5 hours.

Getting To O’Hare Airport

The exact time depends on your flight type, luggage, terminal, and departure time.

Flight Type

Recommended Arrival Time

Domestic (carry-on, TSA PreCheck/CLEAR)

1.5 to 2 hours

Domestic (checking a bag)

2 to 2.5 hours

Domestic during peak times

2.5 to 3 hours

International flight

3 hours

6 Key Factors That Affect Arrival Time at ORD

Factor

Impact on Arrival Time

TSA security wait times

Add 15 to 45 minutes at peak

ORD Next construction

Add 15 minutes

Airline check-in cut-offs

Hard stops 45 to 60 minutes before departure

Peak travel periods

Add 30 to 60 minutes

Parking and shuttle

Add 10 to 35 minutes for economy lots

TSA PreCheck / CLEAR

Save 20 to 30 minutes

1. TSA Security Wait Times

Most of the day, standard lanes at O'Hare clear in 10 to 20 minutes. That changes quickly during the departure waves:

  • 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.: 30 to 45 minutes

  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: 10 to 20 minutes

  • 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.: 25 to 40 minutes

  • After 8 p.m.: usually under 15 minutes

Checkpoint hours matter for early flyers. The latest opening time for Checkpoint 5 in Terminal 2 is 3:15 a.m. The other two checkpoints, Checkpoint 1 in Terminal 1 and Checkpoint 7A in Terminal 3, open at 3:30 a.m. Checkpoint 10 in Terminal 5 is open 24 hours. PreCheck checkpoints usually work between 3:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Monitor TSA wait times for O'Hare through the MyTSA App or your airline’s app before travelling. This is also a main factor in deciding how early to arrive at O'Hare.

2. ORDNext Construction (Through 2034)

O'Hare is undergoing ORDNext, the largest terminal modernisation in the airport's history.

Area

Status

Terminal 5 (10 new gates, expanded checkpoints)

Complete (2023)

Terminal 2 (Alaska, JetBlue)

Open, no demolition yet

Concourse D (14 gates)

Under construction, opening 2030

O'Hare Global Terminal (replaces Terminal 2)

Planned, opening 2033

Currently, the effect on arrival times is minor. The construction barrier, rerouting of walkways, and lane switching will cause about 15 extra minutes. Terminal 2 is currently fully operational, while the most disruptive events, including demolition work on Terminal 2 to construct the Global Terminal, will not happen until the latter part of the decade.

3. Airline Check-In Policies

United carries nearly half of all flights to O'Hare Airport, while American takes up around one-third. Both airlines close check-in and luggage drop-off much earlier than the departure time:

  • United: 30 minutes before departure for domestic flights without any checked baggage, 45 minutes for domestic flights with checked baggage, and 60 minutes for international flights.

  • American: 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights, 60 minutes for international flights.

  • Foreign airlines at Terminal 5, including Lufthansa, Emirates, and ANA, adhere to the 3-hour policy.

  • United provides Twilight Bag Drop service at O'Hare Airport; travellers for flights departing from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. may drop off their baggage from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. the previous day.

4. O'Hare Busiest Periods of Departure

The significance of when you should arrive at O'Hare Airport is best highlighted during times of peak traffic. These include:

  • Work week mornings: 5 a.m. – 8 a.m.

  • Afternoons/early evenings: 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

  • Every Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving and the Sunday afterwards form a consistent trend in being the busiest days of the year at ORD.

  • Weeks of summer vacations: the week of July 4th, 2026 was projected to have 1.62 million passengers in six days, topping 300,000 on Sunday, July 5th.

  • Departing flights midday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. seem to be the fastest in domestic departures.

5. Parking and Terminal Accessibility

  • The main parking garage is directly linked to Terminals 1, 2, and 3, giving an allowance of 10 to 15 minutes for reaching far gates. Terminal 5 has its separate garage and requires walking for 5 minutes from the check-in area.

  • Economy Lot F is located in the Multi-Modal Facility ($30 per day) and can be accessed to any terminal through the free ATS train.

  • Economy Lots G and H will cost you $16 per day, while access will be through a shuttle to the Multi-Modal Facility and the ATS train. The shuttles and ATS operate 24 hours a day, every 5 to 10 minutes. Allow 30 to 35 minutes.

  • Rideshares and taxis will leave you at the departure level of every terminal.

  • CTA Blue Line runs round the clock and will get you there without ever coming into contact with any expressway traffic.

6. TSA PreCheck and CLEAR at O'Hare

Both programs are available at ORD, and both change the time considerably.

  • PreCheck lines are accessible in Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5 between 3:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Typically, the CLEAR line is valid for Terminals 1, 3, and 5 and starts at 4:15 a.m.

  • Passengers who are PreCheck and CLEAR members keep their shoes, belts, and light coats on and keep their computers and liquids inside their bags.

  • People with PreCheck or CLEAR and one carry-on should arrive 1.5 hours before their flights during non-peak hours.

Final Thoughts

When you need to arrive at Chicago O’Hare International Airport really depends on your flight, luggage, and travel window. However, two hours prior to a domestic flight and three hours prior to an international one serve as a solid starting point.  If you add three more minutes for economy parking, 30 more minutes in case of peak-hour arrival, and if you use PreCheck/CLEAR, you can get back some of this time.
